What To Hear This Weekend | W9 '23

Smooth, Silky and soft sounds for your headtop.

The JuJu Exchange – JazzRx

48 minutes and 28 songs of smooth silky jazz. A tightly packaged set of experimental jazz worth listening to while going on a walk or sitting in a park lying down watching the clouds pass over your head.

In terms of length this is The Juju Exchange’s longest project but they continue their theme of very short individual tracks with an average track length of 1:42 per song. Interestingly, despite the bite-sized portions of these tracks none of them fail to feel like a boundless exploration of where sound could go.

If you enjoyed their first project, you’ll love this.

If you haven’t checked out their first project – you need to.

Strong recommend, these lads never disappoint.

Dreamville – Creed III: The Soundtrack

The hiphop powerhouse Dreamville have probably been the hardest working collective over the last 4 years. This surprise drop comes as the 3rd album from the collective in the last 4 years. The group continue to solidify themselves as the team to beat with this soundtrack. With dope beat selection, a great depth of talent in their roster and in that of their collaborators, I have no doubt that this project has some bangers in it.

Masego - Masego

Then we have Masego - this guy can be annoying sometimes but his music is really dope. I think he has this really cool ability to do popular music but jazzify it. Having listened to the first bit of the album he has managed to strike that balance once again, coming through with smooth beats and music that goes down easy.

The self-titled album is a no brainer addition to the Sunday chill/groove playlists.

Kali Uchis – Red Moon In Venus

From the very first second this album is laced with chords softer than cashmere.

With Red Moon In Venus, Kali Uchis comes through with more sauce for the meal that is our Sunday playlists.

Through the use of spacy & lucid sounds; impactful tone setting basslines; and a vocal tone that that’s akin to being gently caressed in the moonlight, Uchis delivers some of her most soulful work yet.

Although this is undoubtedly the most RnB focused of her projects the Latina artist still manages to explore within the genre, presenting a fresh and thoroughly engaging soundscape throughout.

My favourite drop of the week, I insist you give this album your ear.
