Zeitz MOCCA Announces New Global Council and Members

Today, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) announces a new Global Council initiative that continues the institution’s mission to establish a robust programme and agenda of making a transformative contribution to the landscape of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.

The Global Council is an international membership group of art enthusiasts that support Zeitz MOCAA’s mission to produce and present cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions and critical programming, enhance the careers of Africa’s most talented artists, strengthen art education and strive for access for all. In addition to being global ambassadors and working towards raising the profile of the institution through advocacy and communication, the Global Council champions the vision and mission of Zeitz MOCAA.

In April, the institution officially welcomed Acha Leke to the position of Zeitz MOCAA Global Council Chair. Leke is a Senior Partner and Chairman of McKinsey Africa and a member of McKinsey’s Shareholders Council. He says: “I’ve always been moved by the stories of Africa’s contemporary art and the role that art can play in supporting Africa’s transformation. I am also very inspired by the next generation of emerging artists across the continent and fundamentally believe in the need for and the power of strong institutions in Africa. This is why I am so proud to serve as the inaugural Chair of the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council. I look forward to the museum’s future success and this opportunity to help expand its reach and take its important work forward.”

The museum also welcomed renowned artists Julie Mehretu and Wangechi Mutu, as well as Art Basel Global Head of VIP Relations Michèle Sandoz in late May to the Council, and most recently, Africa Lighthouse Capital Founder Bame Pule.

“Cultural philanthropy change-makers such as those who have joined the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council play a vital role in raising awareness for cultural institutions in their aims to transform societies through art and creativity. By joining hands in the advancement of the Zeitz MOCAA vision and mission, our Global Council members are instrumental in developing a legacy for art history and institutional practice” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA.

The announcement of the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council will be marked by a cocktail event at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland on 15 June 2022.

In November, the Global Council will convene at Zeitz MOCAA for the inaugural Zeitz MOCAA Gala, in partnership with Gucci, which marks the opening of a major exhibition titled When We See Us that aims to unveil the deeper historic contexts and networks of complex and underrepresented artistic genealogies that stem from African and Black modernities.
